Neck Exercises for Firming: What They Can and Can’t Do
December 20, 2024
Do neck exercises actually firm and tighten a sagging neck? Here's the honest answer: they can strengthen the platysma and other neck muscles, improve posture, and modestly improve how the neck area looks — but no exercise tightens loose skin. Skin laxity is a collagen problem, not a muscle problem, and understanding that distinction will save you months of frustration.

Exercises Worth Doing
- Chin tucks. Sit tall, draw your chin straight back (making a "double chin"), hold five seconds, repeat ten times. Strengthens deep neck flexors and counteracts "tech neck" posture.
- Neck extensions ("kiss the ceiling"). Tilt your head back and pucker your lips toward the ceiling for ten seconds. Engages the platysma and under-chin muscles.
- Resistance presses. Press your palm against your forehead, then each side of your head, resisting with your neck for five seconds each direction.
- Posture resets. Hourly shoulder-blade squeezes and screen-height fixes do more for how your neck looks than any isolated exercise.
Done consistently, these improve muscle tone and head carriage — and better posture alone can visibly reduce the appearance of neck folds.
What Exercises Can't Do
Crepey texture, horizontal neck lines, and loose skin under the chin come from collagen and elastin decline. Working the muscle underneath doesn't rebuild the skin above it — just as forearm exercises don't tighten forearm skin. Be skeptical of programs promising to "melt" neck sagging through movement alone; some vigorous routines may even deepen dynamic lines.
Pairing Exercise With Collagen Stimulation
Muscle tone plus rebuilt collagen is the realistic non-surgical formula. Professional treatments work on the skin layer exercises can't reach: focused ultrasound (Ultherapy), Apollo Tripolar radiofrequency, ultrasonic cavitation, microneedling with AQ growth factors, and red light therapy — see the full protocol on our neck tightening treatments page. For most people there is little to no downtime; temporary redness or warmth can occur. One client outcome worth seeing: this under-chin contour before-and-after case.
Keep the exercises either way — we mean that. Posture work costs nothing and complements any treatment path, including doing nothing else at all.
Who Should Consider What
Exercises and posture work suit everyone. Professional tightening suits mild-to-moderate skin laxity. If you have significant hanging skin, prominent platysma bands, or neck pain that limits movement, consult a licensed medical provider — a plastic surgeon for advanced laxity, or a physician or physical therapist for pain before starting any exercise program.
Individual results vary.
