Dark Circles: Which Causes RF Microneedling Can Help
December 10, 2024
Dark circles are one of the most common eye-area complaints — and one of the most misunderstood, because "dark circles" is really four different problems wearing the same name. RF microneedling can genuinely help some of them and does very little for others. Here's an honest breakdown of which is which, so you don't spend money treating the wrong cause.

The Four Causes of Dark Circles — and Which Ones RF Microneedling Can Help
- Thin, crepey skin showing what's underneath. With age, under-eye skin thins and the darker tissue and muscle beneath show through. This is where RF microneedling helps most — thickening and firming the skin over a series of sessions can reduce the show-through.
- Visible blood vessels. A bluish or purplish tint from veins close to the surface. Firmer, slightly thicker skin may soften this appearance somewhat, but the vessels themselves are not treated.
- Pigmentation. Genuinely brown discoloration (common with darker skin tones, sun exposure, rubbing, or eczema) is a pigment problem, not a laxity problem. RF microneedling does not remove pigment, and any needling treatment carries a post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk in this area that deserves a frank discussion before treating.
- Tear-trough hollowness. A groove under the eye casts a structural shadow. No skin treatment fills a hollow — this is the domain of fillers (which we do not offer) or surgery, and no amount of collagen stimulation changes bone-and-fat anatomy.
Most people have a mix. Identifying the dominant cause — usually possible in a short in-person assessment — matters more than any device.

How RF Microneedling Works on the Under-Eye Area
RF microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries with fine needles while delivering radiofrequency energy into the deeper skin layers. The combination stimulates your own collagen and elastin production, gradually thickening and firming thin under-eye skin over the following weeks. Treatment is applied around the orbital rim — never on the eyelid itself. It firms skin; it does not restore lost volume or lighten pigment.
Individual results vary.

What Treatment and Recovery Involve
Sessions use a topical numbing cream for comfort. Afterwards, expect redness and mild swelling similar to a light sunburn — this typically settles within hours to a couple of days for most clients, though individual recovery varies. Practitioners usually space sessions four to six weeks apart so collagen can rebuild between treatments. Daily sunscreen afterwards is non-negotiable: sun exposure both darkens circles and undermines results.
When to See a Medical Provider Instead
Some dark circles warrant a medical work-up before any cosmetic treatment:
- New or unexplained dark circles, especially if they appeared quickly
- One-sided darkness or swelling
- Circles accompanied by persistent puffiness, itching, or skin changes (possible allergy, eczema, or thyroid involvement)
- Pigmentation concerns in deeper skin tones, where a dermatologist can distinguish pigment type and advise on safe options
Questions, Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
Will RF microneedling get rid of my dark circles completely?+
No treatment can honestly promise that. If your circles come mainly from thin, crepey skin, most clients see a meaningful improvement over a series of sessions. Pigment-driven and hollow-driven circles need different approaches.
How many sessions does it take?+
Typically a series of sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with improvement building for two to three months after each as collagen develops.
Is it safe for the under-eye area?+
When performed by a trained provider with appropriate settings, treatment around the orbital rim has a good track record. Temporary redness, swelling, and pinpoint marks are common; pigmentation changes are a real risk on deeper skin tones and should be discussed at your consultation.
