Ultherapy vs Morpheus8 vs Thermage: Which Skin-Tightening Treatment Wins?
June 5, 2026
Three of the most-searched skin-tightening treatments, three completely different technologies. For Newport Beach and Orange County clients, this is a clear comparison of Ultherapy, Morpheus8, and Thermage — how each one works and what separates them. Newport Beach Skin Tightening offers Ultherapy and RF microneedling; we do not offer Morpheus8 or Thermage. Reviewed by James Hooper, Founder and Sole Creator of the Butterfly Facelift®, who completed Ultherapy® training through Merz Aesthetics in 2019.

Search "skin tightening" and the same three names dominate: Ultherapy, Morpheus8, and Thermage. They are often discussed as if they were interchangeable. They are not. Each uses a different form of energy, reaches a different depth, and excels at a different job. Choosing well starts with understanding what actually separates them.

The Core Difference in One Sentence Each
- Ultherapy uses FDA-cleared focused-ultrasound technology for specific non-invasive lifting and tightening indications, reaching the deep SMAS layer.
- Morpheus8 uses RF microneedling — tiny needles plus radiofrequency heat — to remodel skin and refine texture. It is included here for comparison and is not offered by our practice.
- Thermage uses surface radiofrequency to firm and smooth the skin without needles. It is included here for comparison and is not offered by our practice.

How Each One Works
Ultherapy — Depth and Lift
Ultherapy uses FDA-cleared focused-ultrasound technology for specific lifting and tightening indications, delivering energy at selected depths that can include 4.5 mm. It is a non-invasive treatment, not the equivalent of surgery. Because it is designed to support your own collagen response, visible changes develop gradually and vary by person. Review our primary Ultherapy service page for treatment details.
Morpheus8 — Texture and Remodeling
Morpheus8 drives micro-needles into the skin and delivers radiofrequency at the needle tips. It is commonly discussed for texture, enlarged pores, mild laxity and acne-scar appearance, with treatment-specific recovery. We do not offer Morpheus8; clients interested in this treatment category can review our RF microneedling service. Our Morpheus8 cost comparison explains the potential course of treatment.
Thermage — Comfortable Surface-RF Firming
Thermage uses monopolar radiofrequency across the skin's surface and is commonly discussed for firming without needles. We do not offer Thermage. Clients interested in radiofrequency options can compare the treatments we do offer during a consultation rather than treating different brand names as interchangeable.
Which One Is Right for You?
Use this as a starting point, then confirm suitability during a professional assessment:
- Focused-ultrasound lifting and tightening → explore Ultherapy
- Texture, pores, scar appearance or crepey-looking skin → explore our RF microneedling
- A coordinated face-and-neck plan → explore the Butterfly Facelift®
- Morpheus8 or Thermage specifically → consult a provider that offers the requested brand; we do not
The Case for Combining Rather Than Choosing
Here is the honest insight behind all three: they are not really competitors — they are tools for different layers. Ultherapy lifts the deep layer, RF firms the dermis, and microneedling refines the surface. Treating only one layer leaves the others untouched, which is why a single device can disappoint.
That is the premise of the Butterfly Facelift® — James Hooper's customized protocol that can coordinate complementary technologies for suitable clients in one session. The microneedling step is collagen induction; no cosmetic injections, injectable fillers, Botox, threads or surgery are used in the protocol. Which technologies are appropriate depends on the client's skin, concerns, goals and suitability. See how the options stack up in our full treatment comparison.
Individual results vary.
Cost Is Not the Right First Question
A single Thermage or Ultherapy session can cost less than a combined protocol, but if it only treats one layer of a multi-layer problem, the "cheaper" option can mean paying again for what it could not address. Judge value by the result you actually want, not the per-session sticker price. See our pricing guide for current ranges, or browse before-and-after photos to set expectations.

Questions, Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ultherapy or Morpheus8 better for jowls?+
The comparison depends on treatment depth, skin quality, anatomy and goals. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound for specific non-invasive lifting and tightening indications, while Morpheus8 is an RF microneedling brand commonly discussed for texture and mild laxity. We offer Ultherapy and our own RF microneedling service; we do not offer Morpheus8.
Which hurts more, Morpheus8 or Ultherapy?+
They use different treatment methods and have different comfort and recovery considerations. Ultherapy sensations can include brief warmth, tingling, pressure or stinging. Morpheus8 uses needles and typically involves numbing and visible recovery. We do not offer Morpheus8, so brand-specific comfort guidance should come from a provider that does.
Does Thermage work as well as Ultherapy?+
They use different energy and treatment approaches. Ultherapy is focused-ultrasound technology with specific FDA-cleared indications, while Thermage is a monopolar-radiofrequency brand. We offer Ultherapy but do not offer Thermage; a provider offering Thermage should explain its candidacy, risks and expected results.
Can these treatments be combined?+
Some of the technologies we offer may be coordinated when appropriate. The Butterfly Facelift® can combine ultrasound, radiofrequency, microneedling and light-based technologies according to the client's plan. We do not combine or claim to provide Morpheus8 or Thermage.
How long do results from each last?+
All three typically last 12–24 months, since they rely on collagen your body builds — though individual results vary. Ongoing aging means periodic maintenance keeps results looking their best.
