RF Microneedling for Under-Eye Wrinkles and Crepey Skin
December 10, 2024
Crepey, finely wrinkled under-eye skin is usually the first place age shows — the skin here is the thinnest on the face and loses collagen sooner than anywhere else. RF microneedling is one of the better-studied non-surgical options for exactly this problem: texture, crepiness, and fine lines in the skin around the eyes. Here's what it does, what it doesn't, and what a realistic treatment course looks like.

Why Under-Eye Skin Gets Crepey
Three forces do most of the damage:
- Collagen and elastin loss. Production declines steadily with age, and the under-eye area starts with less structural reserve than thicker facial skin.
- Sun exposure. UV breaks down existing collagen and accelerates thinning — the single most controllable factor.
- Genetics and repeated movement. Some people are simply predisposed to earlier thinning, and thousands of daily squints and smiles fold the skin along the same lines.
The result is texture — crepiness, fine lines, a slightly loose quality — which is a different problem from fat-pad bags, dark pigmentation, or hollows, each of which needs its own approach.

How RF Microneedling Treats Under-Eye Texture
RF microneedling combines two collagen triggers in one pass: fine needles create controlled micro-injuries, while radiofrequency energy heats the deeper skin layers the needles reach. Both prompt your skin's own repair response, building new collagen and elastin over the following weeks. Compared with traditional (non-RF) microneedling, the added energy works deeper in the skin — useful for laxity, not just surface texture.
Treatment is applied to the skin around the orbital rim — the eyelid itself is never treated. A topical numbing cream keeps sessions comfortable.
Individual results vary.

What Results to Expect, and When
Improvement is gradual by design: collagen rebuilds over two to three months after each session, and most clients do a series of sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. What clients typically notice, in order: skin feels slightly firmer, crepiness softens, fine lines become shallower. What this treatment will not do: remove fat-pad bags, fill tear-trough hollows, lighten pigmented dark circles, or lift significantly hooded lids — those call for different tools, and sometimes for surgery.
Recovery and Aftercare
Expect redness and mild swelling like a light sunburn; for most clients this settles within hours to a couple of days, though individual recovery varies. Practical aftercare:
- Keep the area clean and skip makeup for 24 hours
- Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for several days before and after
- Wear sunscreen daily — sun exposure undoes collagen work faster than anything else
When to Consider a Medical Evaluation Instead
Book a medical consultation — not a cosmetic treatment — if you have eyelid ptosis (drooping of the lid margin), skin resting on your lashes, vision obstruction, sudden or one-sided swelling, or persistent puffiness that doesn't fluctuate. Those are anatomical or medical issues that collagen stimulation cannot address, and blepharoplasty or other medical care may be the appropriate standard.
Questions, Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
How is RF microneedling different from regular microneedling?+
Both use fine needles to trigger collagen; RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy delivered through the needles, reaching deeper layers for a firming effect beyond surface texture.
How many sessions do under-eye wrinkles take?+
Most clients build results over a series of sessions four to six weeks apart, with improvement continuing for two to three months after each. Your starting texture determines the plan.
Does it hurt?+
With topical numbing, most people describe pressure and warmth rather than pain. The under-eye area is sensitive, so settings are adjusted for comfort.
